Yes, be your own boss or at least some of the time (to start anyways). I came across this article over at GetRichSlowly.com the other day and really thought it made some good points about starting your own business. What I liked about this article is that is discusses the benefit of opening a business on the side even if you don’t plan on leaving your job currently. We often think of starting a business and as a result leaving our current job in order to do so. This story points the important point that starting your own business can be done in addition to your current place of employment and not always as a replacement. The post offers up some initial steps one should take when looking to go down this path. Some of those steps include:
.
Decide what business you want to start by finding your passion. To be frank, I started my career in 1984 for the money. But over time I grew to love it. I love getting to know people, hearing their stories and trying to help.
.
Connect with mentors. Identify people who are working in the field and ask them for help. Most people are only too happy to help — especially successful people. (That’s why they are successful by the way.) Don’t be deterred.
.
Moonlight at a business that is in your “passion field”. The best way to learn is to do. Go to work a few hours each week and don’t worry about how much you get paid. You are there for the experience. You might learn that you don’t have the passion you thought you did for the business. On the other hand, you might uncover ways to get involved with the industry in ways you never thought of before.
A side business can be as big or as small as you want it to be. It could be anything from running a small blog all the way up to running a small business of your own. The amount of time that will be required of you will vary based on your goals. Regardless of what your end goals are in your career though, a side business can really help to provide some additional income, sharpen your skills, and provide a larger safety net of job security. Remember, it can be as simple as you want it to be, and is something worth considering for anyone with a little free time to invest.
