Seeing is believing or so the saying goes.   This past weekend in my ongoing quest to learn more about self employment,  I starting reading “Escape from Cubicle Nation Put Your Vision To Work” by Pamela Slim.  One of the first thing she recommends is creating a vision board to help you visualize your goals.  After doing some additional reading online, I decided to give it a go.  Read on to see how you can create your own vision board, and how you can use it to help reach your goals.

So  I had a little time on Sunday and thought this might be worth while after reading up on the subject of a vision board.  A vision board is simply a poster board filled with a bunch of images (from magazines, etc…) that reflect what you want out of a specific goal in your life.  The idea behind it is quite simple.  By physically seeing this collage of images in front of you on a regular, basis you will be more motivated to reach that goal whether is be at work or in your personal life.  Here are the quick and simple steps to create one:

What You’ll Need:

  • Poster Board (Cheap – $1 -$3 at most)
  • Magazines (I found 3-4 that cover a theme of your goal works well)
  • Glue (I prefer a glue stick myself)
  • About 1 hour of time to complete.

Instructions:

  1. Look through the set of magazines you bought and cut out any images that inspire you and reflect your specific goal you want to accomplish.
  2. Once you have a good pile of pictures (should fill the poster board), then you are ready to glue the pictures onto the poster board.
  3. Let the vision board dry for about 20 minutes.
  4. This is the important part! Hang the vision board somewhere you will see it on a daily basis.  I hung mine in my home office next to my desk.  Once you got a nice spot picked out for it, take some time to reflect on the images you selected and how good it would feel to have those photos represent your current life.

That’s it!  I just created mine, which means it’s still too soon to say how well this worked for me, but I’m excited to see if this simple activity makes any type of impact in my drive or desire.  Either way, I’m a strong believer in trying new things and being open minded, which is why I encourage people to do activities like this even if it sounds a little silly.  You would be amazed how something as simple as this can motivate someone.   My initial reaction to my own vision board has been a nice feeling of pride and a slight confidence boost in that this can be my reality if I really want it to.  So now I’m curious as to what everyone else thinks?  Have you created a vision board?  Thought about it?  I’m interested in what you have to say!

  • Hi! it sounds fun, and maybe it could be useful for inspiration and motivation. Maybe I’d try it :)

    • Hi – Thanks for taking the time to post a comment ! I found the vision board comes in handy as a nice daily reminder of where I want to get to down the road. It will also add some nice decoration to your wall when you hang it. =D
