I was once told if you build it, they will come. If only it were that simple. What I’ve come to realize is that if you build it, they might come assuming you remembered to advertise and promote your site correctly all the while maintaining a regular stream of quality content. I’ve seen a slow, but steady increase in traffic to my site over the past few months. However, it wasn’t until about 2-3 weeks ago that I really started to see a decent amount of traffic come my way. My google analytics data quickly revealed the answer to how I was able to generate all this new traffic to my site so quickly.

The answer was obvious upon review: paid advertising. I launched my first ad campaign for my site about 3.5 weeks ago and for the past two weeks I have seen the increase in visitors jump from around a 100 per day to about 500 per day.  I launched a small ad campaign for about $100, which has paid off nicely and is still going strong.  This was my first time doing this and I decided to go with stumbleupon from all the positive reviews I heard about their advertising campaigns for building traffic.  To help out anyone else who is new to this space, I compiled some tips I’ve learned along the way so far:

  • Select a high traffic site to advertise on (i.e Stumbleupon, Facebook, Google, etc…)
  • Plan to spend about a $100 for a decent 1 month ad campaign
  • Research and use keyword tools (i.e Google Keyword Tool) to optimize your ads for maximum exposure
  • When creating the ad, use the options to limit your ad to a specific demographic to boost accurate exposure
  • Make sure you monitor your ad closely and revise the content and keyword use almost daily to increase overall performance
  • Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see results right away – give it a week or so to take effect.

This post comes very close to crossing over into the realm of affiliate marketing, which is discussion for another day.  For now though, I highly recommend anyone looking to get their feet wet in the space of internet advertising to build traffic to their site to use the tools and techniques I mentioned above to launch their own small ad campaign for their own site.  If you give it the time and attention it deserves, I think you’ll be quite happy with the results.  Maybe some of you have already had some experience with advertising online?  Thinking about advertising for the first time online?  Have some additional tips or advice for building traffic to your site?  Be sure to leave a comment and let us know what you think.
