Google Voice continues to be a popular choice for any entrepreneur running a small business out of their own home and how can blame them.  It’s a free service with a free phone number and plenty of useful features.  The only cost to the end user is for making calls, which similar to Skype is pretty cheap.  While Google Voice is not a actual VoIP service by definition (yet!), it’s still a great product for any entrepreneur at home or on the go with their cell phone.  Thanks to the powers that be and more so to friendly competition, Google Voice is not your only alternative.  Entrepreneurs may be shocked to hear that there is actually another similar free service that goes by the name of Phonebooth, which could serve up some decent competition for the search giant.  This is good news for you and me!

The Alternative is Phonebooth:

Phonebooth FREE is a free service of the premium Phonebooth VoIP service the company currently offers at $20 per month.  Phonebooth FREE is similar to google voice in that it gives you a:

  • local phone number
  • free transcribed voicemail
  • web connections
  • 5 free phone extension
  • …and a few other goodies

I haven’t had a chance to try Phonebooth myself yet, but I am a bit curious especially after reading about the phone extension feature.  I’ve use Google Voice and Skype now for different purposes, but I’m always looking for a new and better way to do things as I’m sure many of us are.  I definitely think it is worth checking out further.  If you or someone you know have tried it, be sure to let us know!

  • Phonebooth – free and better than GoogleVoice.

I’ve used them all (Voice, Ribbit) and now Phonebooth and it is quite simply the best of the bunch.

I wrote a post as well and actually have the widget running on my site: http://clicky.me/KkX

  • Shoot me your email address or follow @phonebooth on Twitter and DM me.

I’ll get you an invite so you can give Phonebooth a try.
