dave sifry The Entrepreneur Spotlight: Dave SifryTechnorati is a popular search index for blogs where anyone who is interested can come and browse blogs by a variety of filters.  The site has risen to being one of the top 1000 websites on the internet over the past seven years and shows no signs of slowing down.  The success seen from this site is not knew to the entrepreneur behind it who had launched a few prior business startups before hand.   For this and more we take a look at entrepreneur Dave Sifry in the spotlight this week. We’ll look at just how he did it and highlight what lessons any upcoming entrepreneur can learn.

Summary:

Name: Dave Sifry
Age: 45
Location: San Francisco, California
Claim to fame: Technorati (Popular internet index and search engine of blogs)
Initial cost: <$1000

How He Did It:

Dave Sifry grew up in Long Island where he developed a passion for technology at a young age.  Sifry would go onto study at John Hopkins University where he obtained a degree in Computer Science.  After graduating, he began work at Mitsubishi where he would stay for the next three years.  In 1998, Dave Sifry started his own consulting business, which ran for a few years.  It wasn’t until 2002 that Dave came up with the idea for Technorati, which was launched in November of the same year.  Since then the search index for blogs has grown rapidly indexing blogs that span across all topics.  At the end of 2008, Technorati was indexing over 112 million blogs with traffic patterns to match making it one of the most popular sites on the internet with profits to match!

Lessons Learned:

  • Most entrepreneurs don’t obtain great success overnight.  It takes time to build a business, which is important to understand.
  • Set short-term goals to meet to keep the progress moving, which can also be used to rate your overall success.
  • Don’t be afraid to end one project to start another.
  • Make sure you have a clear vision of where you plan to go with a business.
  • Learn from failure and practice continuous improvement.
